On 18th February 1896 Liverpool beat Rotherham Town 10-1 in remains only time they have scored ten goals league game.
After being relegated the previous season, Liverpool were determined to bounce straight back 1st Division and going into this match were second the table one point behind Manchester City.
Liverpool had won 5-0 at Rotherham earlier the season and the Yorkshire side had lost nine out of their ten away games but nobody had predicted result such this. Despite kicking against the wind the first Liverpool were 5-0 up after 23 minutes and was half hour before keeper Harry Storer touched the ball.
It was 6-0 at half time and the onslaught continued in the second half, Liverpool scoring twice soon after the restart. Rotherham's goal came when they were 9-0 down and despite pulling everyone back into defence to try and avoid conceding tenth Jimmy Ross did so late the game.
The only other times Liverpool have scored ten more since were European games against Dundalk 1969 and Strømsgodset 1974, and Fulham League Cup tie 1987. At the end of 1895-96 they were promoted again, beating Small Heath (now Birmingham City) and West Bromwich Albion test matches.
