When did Liverpool First Win the League? LFC First League Title
1901 FIRST LEAGUE TITLE
In 1900-01 Liverpool were crowned 1st Division champions for the first time.
After looking out of the title race in February, they went on a run of nine wins in eleven games to draw level on points with leaders Sunderland, who completed their fixtures before Liverpool's last game away to West Bromwich Albion. Liverpool went to The Hawthorns knowing that a draw against a team that had already been relegated would be enough to clinch the title.
It was a dismal Monday afternoon and there were less than 2,000 fans in the ground when the game kicked off, with the Reds looking for victory rather than settle for the draw. Midway through the half Sam Raybould's shot was only parried by Albion keeper Joe Reader and John Walker smashed the ball into the net. Albion sought to restore some pride and bombarded the Liverpool goal in the second half but the resolute defence held on.
After the game, the Reds were presented with the championship trophy before returning to Liverpool by train, where they were met by thousands of fans at Central Station. A band played The Conquering Hero as the players were carried shoulder high, although nobody tried to lift larger than life boss Tom Watson.
